Discount Kitchens Etc. has been in the kitchen cabinetry business for over 35 years, and every year requires a little bit of adjustment to the latest trends in kitchen design. The National Kitchen & Bath Association (NKBA) has released the latest 2017 Kitchen & Bath Design Trends Report surveying some of the latest trends in kitchen design, and we would like to share some of their conclusions with our valued customers today in hopes that they can find inspiration in designing their own kitchen remodeling projects, whether contractors designing for clients or homeowners designing for their own remodeling project.
Top 10 Kitchen Design Trends according to the NKBA:
– While Transitional kitchens remain the most popular stylistic design, Contemporary-styled kitchens have now overtaken Traditional kitchens in design popularity. Some popular up-and-coming variations of Contemporary kitchens are Industrial and Mid Century Modern.
– White has been a mainstay as the most popular cabinet color over the last decade, and now the NKBA concludes that gray cabinets are the latest emerging trend alongside white cabinets, gaining in popularity to become one of the top-selling colors in modern kitchens. Blue painted and high gloss cabinets are also becoming more popular, fitting an overall rise in blue and black color schemes in kitchens.
– Perhaps linked to the rise of popularity in Contemporary-styled kitchens, the NKBA reports increased popularity for two-toned kitchens and kitchens with mixed materials and metals across surfaces and as accents.
– Metal cabinets may be on the rise in 2017, especially with younger, male designers, although wood cabinets are still by far the dominant cabinet material.
– Cabinet features and accessories like furniture-look pieces, rollouts/pullouts, and LED-lighting are some of the most popular kitchen cabinet features. Crown molding usage is no longer as popular while rustic and reclaimed woods are notably on the rise.
– Quartz is the top kitchen countertop material and its usage continues to rise, with granite as the second most popular countertop material, although its usage appears to be declining.
– Induction cooktops and convection ovens are on the rise, as well as microwave drawers as opposed to freestanding or built-in microwaves. Steam ovens appear to be on the rise as well, though still a relatively small segment of the market.
– Technology integration is now an important consideration, with higher demand for tech amenities and more wiring, internet-connected appliances, docking stations, and pathways for future integration.
– Interior barn and pocket doors are on the rise.
– Accessibility and universal design features are becoming bigger considerations for kitchen designs.
